Small feather tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small feather is drawn in black ink on the inner wrist, angled diagonally with its quill toward the bottom left. The feather has a clean outline with hatched lines suggesting the barbs and some shading along one side. The image is black and grey against soft, warm skin tones, with a plain dark background.

Yesterday a courier came up the Nile road with a satchel and a grey bird on his shoulder. It kept preening the one long flight feather it had left in its wing. The courier said it had carried a message from the harbour at Canopus and would carry my reply back by evening. I wrote on thin papyrus, rolled it, tied it with my own blue thread, and the bird was over the granary roofs before I had finished the knot. I stood in the courtyard longer than I should have, watching it turn toward the west.

The feather it dropped was lying by the well when I came back down. Quill end first, the vane still glossy, one edge ragged from the wind. I carried it to the cutting bench. It was too good to waste, so I have kept it for myself, and I think I will write my next letter to you with it, slowly, in the old hand.
