Feather tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black and grey feather runs vertically down the forearm, with its central shaft drawn as a fine dark line. The soft grey gradients across the barbs suggest depth and a realistic finish. The arm is raised near the head against a pale, softly lit background, with the tattoo placed as the main focal point.

The gulls had given up on the fish heads by the time Maren came up the harbour steps with the net over her shoulder. Her brother Tobin was waiting at the top, hands jammed in his coat, staring past the breakwater the way he stared at a bill he could not pay.

A grey feather had caught on the iron railing, long and pale, and he had not touched it. 'Wind's turned,' he said. 'Mother says so, and so does that.' Maren had never believed the old tale that a feather left on a railing carried a boat's luck back to shore, but she believed her brother's face. It was the face he had worn the winter their father went under off the Skerry.
So she lifted the feather and held it against the flat grey water. The shaft ran true through the middle, dark as wet rope, and the barbs faded from charcoal at the base to something nearly silver at the tip. 'It's a gull's,' she said. 'Off the breakwater. Nothing that flies is coming home for a bird that bad.' She pressed the quill between her palms and carried it down the steps, Tobin trailing behind her as he always did.
The boat was still tied at the slip, rocking gently. Maren tucked the feather under the thwart where the salt could reach it, and for the first time since the winter, Tobin untied the rope himself.
