Small feather tattoo on the lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A small feather is tattooed on a bare lower leg, drawn with fine outlines and soft grey shading that gives the quill and barbs some depth. A silver coin with the word BRASIL is resting on the skin above the feather, and it is not part of the tattoo. The composition is centred on the leg against a dark background, with the feather tilted diagonally below the coin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The draught in Pedra Alta was always the first thing the men asked about, before the price of gold or the rain. My uncle Tomé gave me a grey feather from the hen coop and a ten-centavo coin that had been in his pocket since the flood year, and told me to drop the feather down the ventilation shaft and watch where it went. If it fell straight, the air was dead and nobody went in. If it turned, the mountain was breathing.

I was eleven and thought the coin was for luck, so I pressed it into the mud at the lip of the shaft, the way the old women left bread for the saints. The feather slipped from my fingers and hung there, unhurried, tilting as if it had somewhere else to be. Then it swung east, toward the old adit where nobody had worked since the collapse, and I felt cold move across my wrists.

Tomé did not shout. He pulled the coin out of the mud, rubbed it on his sleeve until the word BRASIL caught the lamplight, and said a coin remembers the hand that set it down. We walked the long way round the ridge that afternoon, and the crew who cleared the eastern adit that week came out with every lamp still burning, which was the only measure anyone in the village ever trusted.

Years later I still keep a grey feather in my coat. I never drop one down a shaft now. Sometimes I let one fall from a window in the city and watch which way it turns, and I think of the coin in the mud and how long a small thing can hold a hand's warmth.
