Small dragon tattoo on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black dragon design with a coiled tail and spiky wings or fins sits on the forearm. The linework and fill are solid black on a light skin tone, with a silver coin placed below it for scale. Denim fabric fills the background and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

Dear Tom,

The big top came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, and Mr Harrow has finally admitted what the whole company already knew. The lions went to a zoo in Chester last spring, the old elephant died in the winter, and all we have left to sell is the dragon. It isn't a real dragon, of course. It is Eli Dunmore's trick on the trapeze wire, a black silk thing I stitched myself, with a coiled tail and spiky wings that catch the lamplight when he swings it over the sawdust. Nobody has paid to see it in a month.
Yesterday Mr Harrow called us into the caravan and set a single sixpence on the table, the last of the takings, and told us to share it. Eli wouldn't touch it. He pushed it back across the wood and said the dragon was owed a coin for every mile it had flown. Then he took my pen and drew the beast on the back of his hand, the same tail, the same wings, curling down past his knuckles. He said it was the only tattoo a travelling man could afford, and Mr Harrow laughed until he coughed into his handkerchief.
We fold the silk tonight, every seam. I asked Eli what he'd do with the dragon once the show is gone, and he shrugged and said it would fly in a hall somewhere with a proper roof, or it would hang in my sewing box and be ugly company for moths. I have put the sixpence in my purse, not to spend but to keep. It is the only thing left in the wagon that still shines.
Write soon, and tell Mother I am well.
Nell
