Small fine line marks on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A cyclist rides a bicycle, with the lower leg and a yellow cycling shoe on the pedal in sharp focus. A small tattoo of thin, dotted or stroked black marks sits on the calf, and the design is too small to read clearly. The bike frame and road behind are blurred, keeping attention on the leg and tattoo.

Dear Oswin, the pass above Carrow is finished at last, though the Crown's engineers insist on calling it a road and the mountain folk call it nothing at all. I have put my dotted line on the vellum where the switchbacks fall, one mark for every hundred paces of climb, and the count came to four hundred and eleven before the snow stopped us.

Brother Tam, who keeps the toll gate at the foot, has taken to counting the riders who come up on their two-wheeled carts of brass and ash. The Vellmoor racers wear yellow, the colour of summer broom, and they climb with their heads down like oxen who have forgotten the plough. Last market day one of them stopped at the gate and asked me, very politely, whether the mapmakers of Ardis had ever surveyed the inside of a tunnel. I said no. He laughed and rode on.
Here is the part I cannot explain in a letter. When the wind came over the ridge, the marks I had inked on the map began to lift off the page, the way frost lifts off a windowpane, and they settled in a thin line across the back of my hand. I thought it was a smudge and rubbed at it. It did not come off. The gate-keeper's wife says it is only the cold, and that the cold is what makes a road look like a sum.
I am sending the map by the carrier on Thursday, with the count copied at the foot in case the marks do not survive the journey. Keep the broom-yellow ribbon I left you. If the dots go faint, trace them again from the pass to the gate, one for every hundred paces, and you will find the way down.
