Bicycle tattoo on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple outline of a bicycle is tattooed on the lower leg, shown in dark ink against sunlit skin. The rider is seen from behind on a mint green bike, with a sunny tarmac road and a bottle cage visible in the frame. The tattoo sits in the centre of the composition and is the clear focal point.

Dear Marguerite,

The bike came back to me on Tuesday, wrapped in a tarpaulin and smelling of the depot van. Mr Okonedo had painted the frame again, mint green, the same shade Dad picked in 1961 because it reminded him of the sea at Margate. The paint has chipped at the bottom bracket where it always did, and the bottle cage was rattling loose, so I tightened it with the spanner from the drawer by the sink.

I know you think I should sell it. You said so on the phone, and I didn't argue, because the road outside the flats is cracked and pale in the afternoon glare and I still can't ride down it without seeing him at the kerb with his cap pushed back, shouting that I was too slow. I rode it anyway. I got as far as the bridge and back, and at the lights a woman in a yellow mac asked whether the bike was for sale.

Her question has stayed with me. I haven't decided anything. Last night I took the fine brush from the tin and went over the gold pinstripe along the top tube, which had worn down to bare metal near the seat clamp. It took an hour and my hands were shaking by the end, but the line is back, thin and bright, and it catches the light the way it used to.

Write soon. Tell me whether the sea is still grey at Margate, and whether you have finally stopped being angry with me.

Love, Ruth
