Rose tattoo on a thigh beside a red bike
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A dark rose tattoo sits on the outer thigh of a person wearing denim shorts and a red and white striped top. The shading appears to be black and grey, with bold outlines around the rose head and leaves. The subject stands beside a red fixed-gear bike on a paved surface, with the tattoo shown in the lower-middle of the frame.

Nobody answers a bell like that without a fight. I leaned on it until a sash window went up and a woman in a dressing gown leaned out with a cigarette she clearly wasn't supposed to have. She read the card, then read the name on my docket, and laughed so hard she had to hold the sill.
"That's Danny," she said. "He's been on my sofa since Tuesday. Tell him the flowers are the only thing he's getting from me."

The rose came down the stairwell wrapped in its paper, and she left it on the step for me to collect. I was the one who had to take it back to the bike, wedge it under the bungee, and ride off with the red wheels spinning and a single bloom knocking against my knee all the way to the next drop.
