Small bicycle tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A small black bicycle outline is tattooed on the upper thigh of a woman wearing a blue gingham dress, with her hand holding the hem. The linework is thin and simple, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The composition is cropped below the face and places a wooden wall and a parked bicycle behind her.

The machine came in on a Tuesday, leaning against the post office wall as if it had pedalled itself the eleven miles from Hollin Cross. Mrs Abernethy's grandson had ridden it down the Cross Road in the rain and left it with the chain off, which Ivy Pell took as a personal insult to the bicycle.

She turned it upside down on the trestles at the back of the shed, where the slatted walls let the light in in thin stripes. The frame was black, the enamel worn grey along the crossbar, and someone had scratched a pair of initials under the saddle clamp, R.H., with a date from the year before the war. Ivy knew the initials. Reuben Hale had bought the bicycle new from the Ledsham shop and ridden it to the mill every morning until the mill closed and he did not.

She rebuilt the chain link by link with a borrowed breaker bar. Her hands were black to the wrist by dusk, and she did not stop for tea. When the back wheel spun true, she took a tin of gloss and a fine brush and painted a small outline on the mudguard where the old lettering had flaked away: two wheels, a frame, a crossbar, nothing more, because that was all the bicycle had ever needed to say.

Mrs Abernethy's grandson came back at six, found the bicycle propped by the door, and rang the bell twice. He got on and rode off without a word. In the morning the paint had dried to a hard black line, and someone had already pressed a small thumbprint into one corner of it.
