Fine line bee and dotted heart on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo shows a stylised bee with looped wings and curled antennae, linked by a dotted line that curves down into a heart shape and then trails off. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading, and the design sits diagonally against plain pale skin on a dark background.

The Marjorie Hale had not come in by the second night, and Ilse Maddox would not stop walking the harbour wall. Her mother said the sea had kept better men than her father, and that crying over water only made it saltier. Ilse went home instead and took the jar from the windowsill, where a bee had lived since the August gales, sleeping in the sugar bowl and humming when the kettle boiled.

The old men at the slipway said bees would not fly over open water, that it was not their business to. Ilse did not argue. She took a length of red wool from her mother's basket, tied one end to the bee's thin leg, and carried the jar down to the end of the pier where the lamp hung low. She opened the lid. The bee rose with the wool trailing behind it like a dropped stitch, circled twice over her head, and then went out over the black water, dipping and looping as though it were sewing a seam across the sea.
She waited until her fingers went numb on the spool. Near dawn the wool went taut and began to pull, slowly at first and then steadily, the way a line feels when something heavy is on the other end. The Marjorie Hale came round the point with her sails furled and her crew asleep on their feet, and the wool was knotted round her tiller in a small loop, shaped the way a child draws a heart.
Ilse kept the spool. The bee was never found again, though the jar stayed on the sill, and every autumn the boats went out, and every autumn someone's daughter tied red wool to something small and sent it after them.
