Small line tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo sits on the inner wrist, showing a rounded heart-like outline joined to a curling stroke at the top and a few open line shapes below. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The plain skin background fills most of the frame, with the tattoo placed near the centre.

The pass closed on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the Crooked Hart had eleven guests and one kettle that still worked. Mrs Abernethy had come up from Kendal with a trunk of letters tied in green wool, and she had not stopped talking since the coach left. I let her talk. Snow makes people honest in the small hours, and I wanted to hear what she would say about her husband before the fire went out.

She said he had drawn on the steamed window of the coach house with one finger, a loop that rose and curled over at the top, like a ribbon lifting off a parcel. Beneath it he drew a rounded shape, and then three open strokes that might have been legs or might have been the marks a bird leaves in mud. "He never finished anything," she said. "Only ever the start of something." The window had fogged over before the frost took it.
On the last night the power failed and we lit every candle in the house. I found a pencil stub in the bar drawer and asked her to show me exactly where the curl began. She traced it in the air above the table with one fingertip, and then, slowly, she drew it again on a paper napkin: the heart, the curl, the open strokes, every line left unclosed.
When the plough came up on Saturday morning she folded the napkin into her coat pocket and paid for the room twice, insisting the extra was for the tea. I still have the stained paper pinned above the till. The lines never meet, and I have decided that is the point.
