Small flower sprig design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A slender stem rises from the bottom of the frame and carries three or four small blue-violet flowers near the top, with one small bud and a single green leaf partway along. The linework is thin and delicate, with soft watercolour-style shading in the petals and leaf. The subject sits centrally on a plain white background with generous empty space around it.

Cook Halloran had the potatoes peeled before the bell for the morning watch, which was the only thing aboard the Marigold Rose that ever went to plan. The galley smelled of wet oilskin and scorched sugar. He wiped his hands on the cloth tucked into his belt and looked at the shelf above the stove, where the tin of tea had been moved again.

Someone had moved it because they wanted him to see what was underneath: a flattened pocket book, its cover soft as cloth, with a sprig pressed between its pages. Three blue flowers no bigger than a fingernail, a bud still curled at the top, a single leaf gone the colour of weak tea. Ada, the second steward, had found it in the bread locker. She had brought it to him without a word, which for Ada was a speech.
"Forget-me-nots," Halloran said, mostly to the potatoes.
"Your mother's, you said." Ada was leaning in the doorway with her arms folded. "Your mother grew them on the windowsill in Hull."
He had said that, two ports ago, drunk on the cheap rum Mr Cole kept for the carpenter. He had not expected anyone to remember it. The ship groaned and leaned, and the tin rattled on the shelf. Halloran picked up the book, turned it over, and found the pencilled date on the inside cover. It was his own hand, years younger.
He put it back where it had been. "Keep the kettle on," he said. "We'll have tea before the watch changes, and I'll tell you the rest of it then." Ada nodded as though she had been waiting for exactly that, and the flowers stayed flat and blue between the pages while the sea went on pushing at the hull.
