Compass rose tattoo at the nape of the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair in a loose bun is photographed from behind, showing a compass rose tattoo at the base of her neck. The compass star has a shaded central point and fine, swirling ornamental details curling around its arms. The skin around the tattoo is slightly red, and the plain background is out of focus.

The lamp in the chart room had guttered twice before Tomas Hale admitted the north point was wrong. He held the parallel rule against the vellum and watched the brass needle of the spare compass tremble between its pins, the ship rolling beneath them as though the Atlantic had heard the argument and taken the captain's side.

Captain Orrin wanted the rose finished before they raised Flores. He liked his compass drawn fine, the eight points running out like the arms of a star, and he liked the scrolls Tomas had copied from a Lisbon printer's border, curling between the points like sea-foam on a turning tide. Tomas had drawn them to hide a bad sounding he had marked in pencil and never inked over. The swirls were pretty. They were also a lie, and the lie sat exactly where a navigator would look.
He dampened a rag, lifted the pencil line from the vellum, and shaded the centre boss until the lodestone looked heavy enough to pull a man home. When the watch called the first sight of land, he went up on deck with ink on his cuff and told the captain everything. Orrin said nothing for a long while, then went below and studied the chart by the swinging lamp.
He pinned it above his bunk with the rose facing the door, so that whichever way a man came in, the first thing he saw was the way back.
