Small geometric arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow tattoo runs vertically along the inner forearm, with a chevron-feathered tail, a triangular notch, a short shaft with cross marks, and a diamond-shaped head. The linework is thin and even, drawn in solid black ink with no shading. The skin is light and the background is softly out of focus, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Tomas, the pass has closed twice since you left, and the men at the hut say the snow will hold until the thaw. I have counted the cairns from the lower path and there are forty-one, not forty as the old survey claims, so someone has been building them in the dark. I have decided it is the goats. Mrs Halloran swears it is her late husband, who never once in his life finished a job.

Yesterday I found an arrow carved into the flat stone under the third cairn. Its head was a diamond cut so sharp it could have shaved a man, and its feathers were drawn as neat chevrons, one row over another, like the slates on a roof. A short shaft crossed by two little bars ran beneath it, and the whole thing pointed down the valley toward the river crossing we marked as impassable in the spring. I copied it into my notebook exactly, lines and all, because you would have laughed at me for leaving out the bars.
I went down to the crossing this morning with the rope and the good lantern. The water is lower than I feared. On the far bank, pinned under a stone the size of a loaf, was a scrap of oilcloth with the same diamond drawn in charcoal. Someone is marking a safe line for whoever comes after, and whoever it is does not want to be thanked.
I am going across at noon with Anders and the lantern. If I do not write again, the map is in the tin under my bed, and the arrow is the true bearing, not the one on the survey. Keep the kettle warm for me.
