Feather and script S on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is tattooed on the back of a hand, angled from near the wrist towards the knuckles, with a thin script letter S beside its tip. The feather has delicate outlines and soft grey shading along its barbs, giving it a light, detailed look. The ink is black and grey with a slight blue tint from the lighting, and the composition is a close, slightly angled view against a blue cloth.

By the time the Sorrel's gig came up the slipway, you had already read the feather three times, which was two more than the post required. It had arrived folded inside a bill of lading for salt cod, a grey wing feather no longer than your little finger, and beside its tip someone had scratched a single S in a looping hand, as if the sender could not decide whether it was a signature or a sound.

Tamsin at the counter laughed when you asked for the good nib. 'You want to write to a man with a bird's quill?' You did, and you cut the shaft yourself with the paper knife, the way your father trimmed pens for the harbour ledger. The ink took well to it. You wrote the date, the tide height at Marrow Quay, and then, before you could talk yourself out of it, his name.
Silas had always been the one who noticed gulls. On the crossing he had counted them against the weather, and once he told you a feather only falls when the bird has decided to let it go. You had thought it a sailor's superstition until you held the grey one up to the window and saw how the barbs had kept their shape through the salt air and the damp of the hold.
When the gig's oars knocked against the stones that evening, you were already on the steps with the letter folded small in your palm. You did not wait for him to climb up. You held it out, the ink still wet, and the tide was on the turn.
