The photograph shows a person seen from behind, with dark hair in a loose updo and a white sleeveless top. A small, solid black circle sits on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck and slightly to one side of the spine. The image is black and grey, with a plain pale textured wall behind the subject and soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hatch seal on Corvid Deck still wears its old paint, and you are the only one left who knows the black disc set into it means the seed vault is sealed from the inside. You thumb the resin and feel it give a little, the way it always did when Maro showed you how to press it home. Nobody on the ring talks about the first winter any more. They talk about the greenhouse rotation, the water debt, the children born with their eyes open to the dark. You do not talk about it either. You just check the disc each shift, because the wardens say a seal out of true is how a whole lung of crops goes to vacuum in the space of one sleep cycle.

Tonight the disc is true. You stand there longer than you need to, listening to the recyclers hum through the bulkhead, and think of Maro's hand over yours, her sleeve smelling of soil and cold metal. She said a circle was the only shape that could hold air in every direction at once. You told her that was rubbish, that circles were just where lines got tired of going anywhere. She laughed and kept your hand where it was.

When the relief shift arrives you hand over the key and say nothing about the seal. Walking back toward the mess you pass the viewport, where the far star is a pinprick and the ring turns slowly around its own dark. You realise that for the first time in years you are not counting the seals. You are counting the people who would notice if one went missing.
