Small geometric symbol on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows the back of a person's neck from behind, with dark hair cut short at the nape and a light knitted collar below. A small symbol made of two linked diamond shapes sits centrally on the neck. The thin, even black linework has no visible shading, and the soft, warm-toned background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Hush now, and pass me the poker, because the snow's come in under the back door again and I'll not tell this with my feet frozen. You all know the Hollin farm sits at the top of the lane, where the wind has nothing to stop it till Norway. Well. Back before the war, when old Ada Hollin still kept the ewes, there were two girls up there, Nell and Sukey, and they had one lantern between them.

Every evening in the lambing weeks they went out to the far pasture with that lantern, one holding the frame and one holding the handle, because the glass had cracked and nobody had the money for another. The frame was two iron diamonds bolted together at the middle, so the light fell in two pools on the snow, one for each of them. Nell said it was the cleverest thing her father ever made. Sukey said it was a cage. They argued about it the whole way across the field, and that is how you knew they were all right.
One night in January the blizzard came off the moor faster than the girls could get back. The lantern guttered out at the gate. Nell could not see her own hand, so she stood still and called, and Sukey called back, and the two of them walked toward each other's voices with their arms out until their fingers touched. They never once let go of that iron frame, and by morning the drift had buried the gate to the top bar.
Ada carved a mark into the byre door that spring, two diamonds meeting at the waist, so anyone coming up the lane in weather would know there were two hands on the light. The door's still there. Go and look at it when the thaw comes. Mind your step on the way out, and take the lamp with you. Two of you can carry it easier than one.
