Small green leaf on upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A single leaf on a thin dark stem sits centrally on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck. The leaf is shaded in soft greens and yellows with touches of pink, and the stem is drawn in fine dark line. The subject is shown from behind against a plain white background, with a grey sleeveless top in the frame.

Sit still, now, and don't interrupt me the way the Haworth twins used to, or I'll lose the thread. The reunion was held in the Methodist hall that October, the year the chimney came down, and forty-one of us turned up with our hair gone grey or gone altogether. Old Mr Lacey had the register, and he read out the names the way he'd read them in 1979, slow, as if each child might still answer back.

Nobody answered for Eliza Marsh. But at the back of the room, on the peg where the coats went, hung a green cardigan nobody claimed, and in its pocket, folded small, was a leaf. Pressed, it was, the colour of a hedge in June going gold at the edges, with a thread of dark stalk still on it and a blush of pink where the veins met. Lacey held it up to the window light and said, 'Well, that's not from this year's tree.'
The leaf had come off the sycamore behind the school, the one we'd all carved our initials into, and it had been carried, so the story goes, by a girl who had promised herself she'd press one leaf from every autumn she was away. Eliza never came back. Yet someone had been slipping them into that pocket, one a year, with no name attached, and the cardigan had been left on the peg the same way.
We stood there a long while. Then Lacey tucked the leaf back where he'd found it and said we'd put it on the raffle table, and nobody bid, because nobody wanted to be the one to take it home. The sycamore was felled in the spring, but every October since, a small green leaf has turned up somewhere it shouldn't be, and it never lands on the same person twice.
