Small hamsa tattoo on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small hamsa hand design sits on the back of a hand, close to the base of the middle finger. The outline and interior detail are drawn with fine, dense linework and dotted ornamentation. The tattoo is rendered in black and grey ink against plain pale skin and a white background, with silver rings on two fingers.

Dear Mirela, the fair pulled into Harrowgate on Tuesday and by Wednesday the whole field smelled of frying dough and wet canvas. You asked whether I have been eating. I have, mostly from the pie stall run by the Cosgroves, who give me the misshapen ones for nothing.

The silversmith at the far end, Old Anwar, keeps a tray of tiny hands he pricks out with a needle no thicker than a hair. Each palm gets a hundred dots, close as frost on a window, and he says every dot is a word the eye must read before it can do harm. He made one for Lottie, who walks the high wire and has fallen twice this season. She laughed at him, then wore it on a fine chain under her blouse every night after.

Last Sunday the wind took two of the big top's guy ropes and Lottie came down in the lamplight with her wrist torn open. She held up her hand, the little silver charm still hooked on the chain, and said the needle had not broken, so the hand had not either. I sat with her in the wagon until the bandage was on and the wind dropped.

Anwar would not take money for the spare he made me. He said I would need it the day I stopped carrying cages and started holding the other end of the rope. It is in my coat pocket now, and I am not going to tell you whether I believe him. Write back soon, and tell Papa the goat is still alive.
