Small symbol tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two black and white photographs show a hand resting on a dark textured surface, with small tattoos on several fingers. The marks are simple, thin black linework forming chevrons, short strokes and small symbols, with the lower photograph showing the fingers more closely. The fingers are the main focus, with the tattoos sitting along the finger lengths against a plain, low-detail background.

Dear Tomasz,

The chevrons on the Sandhollow road are finished. Forty-one of them, white on black posts, each one pointing the way a driver should lean when the bend comes up out of nowhere. You told me in March that nobody reads signs out here after dark, and you were right, but the dust doesn't care who reads them. It comes sideways and takes the paint off in a single season.
I did the last six yesterday with the thin brush you left in the van. The rust under the guardrail where the council had scraped it, and the arrows where the old pair had split. Mrs Okonedo from the petrol station came out with two flasks of tea and asked why I bothered with the ones nobody could see from the highway. I told her the lorry driver coming through at four in the morning would see them, even if he never thanked anyone for it.
The work has got into my habits. I keep noticing marks: the notches the wind cuts into fence posts, the scratched arrows the lizards leave in the sand when they change their minds. Last week I drew a small chevron on the back of a receipt just to see if it looked as steady on paper as it does on steel.
The last post stands by the dry wash, where the road dips and vanishes. I left it unpainted on purpose. When you come back from the coast, you can paint it yourself, and then the road will be finished, and we can both pretend we knew where it was going all along.
Yours, Ruth
