Fern sprig tattoo across the back of a hand

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown palm down against a plain white wall, with a black botanical tattoo of a fern or sprig running from the wrist across the back of the hand toward the fingers. The leaves and stems are drawn in fine, precise linework with light grey shading that gives the foliage some depth. The composition is simple and clean, with the tattoo as the main focus against the neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told by the florist that ferns were no good for a September wedding, that they flopped by noon and looked like something from a bin. So on the Friday before, she walked the lane behind St Oswald's with a pair of kitchen scissors and cut fronds from the bank where the churchyard wall stayed damp, wrapping each handful in a tea towel she had borrowed from her mum.

Her aunt Bev met her at the lychgate with a carrier bag of bread rolls and a look that said she had opinions. "Wet newspaper," she said, taking one bundle and unrolling it on the vestry table. "Same as your gran did with the sweet peas." They filled jam jars along the windowsill, and by six the room smelled of cut stems and old hymn books, the fronds fanning out over the cream cloths like something that had always grown there.

Dan arrived at the church with his tie crooked and a fern stem stuck to his lapel, which he swore he had not put there. He had found it in his coat pocket after the rehearsal, a single frond Nell had slipped in as a joke. He wore it through the vows anyway, and when the vicar asked for the rings, he laughed so hard the whole front pew turned round.

At the reception, the jars had been moved to the trestle ends, and a little girl in a yellow dress was pressing leaves between the pages of the guest book. Nell watched her and thought that the ferns would be dead by Monday, flattened and brown in someone's drawer. Still, they had held for the whole day, and she decided that was enough.
