A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming off the river since dawn, drumming on the iron canopy over the grain stalls at Lowgate market. Nell sat on an upturned crate beside her mother's sacks, sorting barley heads with fingers gone numb, while her mother counted coins into a tin and muttered about the weather. Nobody came to the stall in weather like this, which was why the tall man in the oilskin stood out so plainly when he stopped in front of the sacks and asked for the old Virgo barley.

Nell had never heard of it. Her mother hadn't either, not by that name, but she knew the sign the man drew for her in the wet dust on the counter: the slender letter with its curl at the foot, the mark the almanac men chalked on the board each autumn to show the harvest was in. He said he would pay a pound a sack. He said his wife would know the seed when she saw it, and he left a card with the same glyph inked on it, a small red heart tucked at the end of its tail.

That heart was what caught Nell's eye. Her mother had kept a hand-tied sack in the back store for as long as Nell could remember, with red thread knotted at its neck, and would never say what was in it. Nell went through the damp warehouse with a torch, found it behind the potato crates, and cut the knot with her teeth.

She filled the man's canvas bag herself, scoop by scoop, while the rain hammered on the canopy. When he walked off towards the bus station with the grain held against his chest, she stood at the stall tying the empty sack shut with the last loop of red thread. Her mother watched her from the tin and said nothing at all.
