Nell Carew had been mending the same net since first light, and her fingers had gone past cold into a dull, obedient ache. The loft above Porthleven harbour smelled of tar and wet rope. Her grandmother had taught her the heart knot. You wove a small web across a loop of tarred twine, pulled it tight into the shape of a heart, and left a hole at the centre the size of a thumb. Nothing heavy could pass through it, Gran said, but bad dreams and bad weather would slip out the middle and never find their way back. Nell had thought it was nonsense until the winter her father's boat came home with its mast snapped, and everyone in the village had hung one above their door.
The Mary Ellen was two hours late. Nell tied off the last knot, clipped two gull feathers to the loose ends so they would swing when the wind came through the shutter, and set the little heart on the nail by the window where she could see the harbour mouth.
When the boat finally rounded the wall, its sail patched in a colour no one had chosen, her brother Tom was at the tiller, grinning like a fool with a split lip. Nell watched the feathers turn. She did not go down to the quay straight away. She sat with her hands in her lap and let the wind pass through the hole in the middle of the heart.
