Mrs Ida Pell had kept the bakehouse on Coldharbour Lane for thirty-one winters, and in all that time she had never sold a cake without first asking the child who bought it what they were hoping for. The children told her things they would not tell their mothers. Hearts, mostly. A boy once asked for a cake that would make his father stop shouting, and she gave him one with a sugar lid. It did nothing, but he came back the next week to say the shouting had been shorter.

She pressed a tin charm into the icing of every cake, a heart, a loop that never closed, a paper case folded like a crown, and the children carried them home in their pockets until the lanes were full of them. The vicar called it superstition. The mayor said it was bad for the teeth. Ida only said the loop was for things that did not end, and the heart was for the people who wanted them to.

On the last Saturday of the year, a girl came in with her palm held flat and asked for a charm that would not wear off in the wash. Ida laughed, then did not. She pressed the loop into the girl's hand with a thumb of cold butter and sent her out into the sleet.
