Dark tattoo on a toned lower abdomen

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A person lies on a white bed with a bare midriff, grey sweatpants with white drawstrings, and a lace waistband visible at the bottom edge. A partly cropped black and grey tattoo sits on the lower left side of the torso, with fine marks also visible near the ribs. The warm-toned skin, bed linen and a glass bottle of fruit on the left and a bowl of fruit on the right make up the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pomegranates came up from the coast in crates lined with newspaper, and by the third week of October Aunt Rosa had stopped pretending she did not want the one with the split skin. Nobody on our street bought the cracked ones. She kept them for herself, peeled them at the kitchen table with a knife she had sharpened on the back step, and set the seeds in a jar on the sill like a row of small red lamps.

My father sold fruit from a barrow by the tram stop and said the cracked ones were the sweetest, which was his way of saying he was tired of throwing them away. He had a rule about the scales. Every Friday he weighed his takings against the brass weights his own father had carried, and every Friday they came out a few grams short. He never said where he thought the grams had gone. He just wrapped the weights in a green cloth and whistled.

The winter Rosa went into hospital, I took over the barrow. A man in a grey coat bought three fruits and asked me to wrap them in the blue paper, the old paper nobody used any more. I checked the scales that morning and found them exactly right, and I understood he had come to see whether I would cheat him. I didn't. I gave him four.

When Rosa came home in spring she counted the seeds in the jar, every one, and told me there was one more than she had left. I did not ask her who she thought had put it there.
