Small heart outline behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A person with dark hair pulled into a ponytail is photographed in profile from behind, wearing a red and black tartan shirt. A small, thin black outline of a heart sits on the skin just behind the ear, on the upper neck. The ink is black, with simple unshaded linework, and the background is a soft, indoor setting.

Nobody on Grainsay asked my mother for a heart. They asked for the tide times, a stitch in a split oilskin, a splinter drawn from a thumb. "Hold the lamp still, Nell," she said, and I did, because the back room smelt of meths and wet wool and I was twelve and wanted to be useful. She pricked the outline with a needle wrapped to a point, quick and light, one stroke for each side of the heart. The top lobes gave her trouble. The left one dipped, a hair's width, and she sat back. The stranger looked at the ceiling and laughed. "Leave it. That's mine now."
The boat went back that afternoon with the wind coming round to the south-west. Mum wiped the needle on a rag and said nothing for the rest of the day, which was how she said most things worth keeping.
Years later a card came over on the post boat from the mainland. It was a photograph taken from behind, a shirt the colour of rust, and at the edge of the frame the little dark heart, still a hair off true at the top, exactly where we had left it. I propped the card against the kettle, where the lamp used to sit, and let the tide do what it does.
