Small birds in flight on the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A profile view of a woman's neck and ear, with her hair pulled back and a gold earring visible. A thin black line runs down from behind the ear, with small bird shapes spaced along it, sitting close to the hairline. The linework is delicate and the ink is solid black with no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Past the ruined keep of Harrowgate, where the bridge had fallen into the moat before anyone's grandmother was born, there lived a weaver's daughter called Maud who could not sleep for the wind. It came through the broken arrow slits all night and left the bedding cold.

One spring the swallows came back to the keep and built their mud cups under the chapel rafters. Maud watched them go in and out. She had a length of black silk her mother had dyed with oak gall, so she tied one end to the gate hinge and the other to her own wrist, and she said to the birds, carry this down the valley to the sea, and bring back whatever the sea has kept.

The swallows took the thread in their beaks, one after another, and drew it out of the keep a few inches at a time. Each bird that came home brought something small: a pale shell, a horn button, once a silver spoon that had gone off the mill boat in a flood. They laid these in the long grass at her feet until the courtyard was full of things nobody in the village had known were lost.

By midsummer the thread ran the whole length of the valley. When the last swallow came home it had nothing in its beak but a sprig of thyme, which it set on Maud's palm before flying out over the wall. She never learned what the sea had kept back for her, but the wind stopped finding the arrow slits that night, and in the morning the swallows had gone south, every one of them, leaving the silk pulled taut across the grass.
