Small heart tattoo on a middle finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A tiny solid heart sits on the side of the middle finger, just below the nail on the first joint. The heart is filled with dark ink and has no visible shading or fine linework. The background is plain and pale, and the white tips of the French manicure nails frame the tattoo.

The nets came up empty three weeks running, and on the fourth morning the cook came up from the galley with his sleeves rolled and asked the mate for a clean rag. The Mab was a herring boat out of Skarrow, and her cook, Old Pell, kept a tin of lamp-black and a single sewing needle wrapped in oilcloth in the pocket of his apron. Nobody had ever asked him what they were for.

He called the youngest deckhand, Ilse, who was seventeen and had not yet learned to keep her mouth shut in the wind. He told her the sea was owed a token, a small thing that could be given and kept. He took her hand, pricked a heart no bigger than a lentil on the side of her middle finger just below the nail, and rubbed the soot into the wound. It stung like nettles. She watched the blood bead and dry and said nothing, because he had told her that a token given with complaint is no token at all.
The next day the nets filled with mackerel so heavy the winch groaned. The crew laughed and slapped Pell on the back, but he only shook his head and went back to his pots. Every haul after that, Ilse's finger rubbed the rope, and the little heart darkened and held its shape while the skin around it toughened.
Years later Ilse was a skipper with a boat of her own, and a young deckhand asked her why she always kept that finger wrapped in a rag at the wheel. She held it up to the lamp. The heart had faded to a grey smudge, like a thumbprint on glass, but she could still find it with her eye shut. "The sea keeps what it is given," she said, "and it lets the rest of us go home."
