Small outline heart on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand held up with the fingers slightly apart, showing a small heart outlined in black on the side of one finger. The heart has a thin, even line with no shading, and it sits near the knuckle on the upper side of the finger. The image is in colour with a warm skin tone against a dark, plain background, and the focus is on the fingers in the foreground.

Dear Tomas,

The frost came early again and took the runner beans clean off their canes, so I've spent the morning pulling blackened leaves and swearing at the compost heap. The sweet peas under the cloche are holding on, though, and I've decided to take that as a kindness from the weather.
I found Dad's seed tin behind the potting bench, the one with the rusted hinge. Inside, under the packets of Early Horn carrots and a lump of string, was the little rubber stamp he used for labelling trays. It's a plain outline heart, no fancy lettering, and the ink pad had dried to a crust. I soaked it in a saucer of warm water for ten minutes and it came back dark enough to print. You'll remember how he used it on every tray, as if the heart meant the seedlings were his favourites and not just the ones that came up.
Mrs Okafor from the end plot came round yesterday to ask if I'd sell her some sweet pea seed. She saw the stamp on the windowsill and laughed, because he once marked her cabbages with it by mistake and she never let him forget. We sat on the step with cups of tea and argued about whether the shed needed a new door. I said no. The door has held up for thirty years, same as the hinge and the tin.
I stamped the last tray this afternoon, the one with the Gardener's Delight tomatoes that never fruit in this cold. Then I put it in the greenhouse where the light lasts longest. Come up at Easter if you can. Bring your boots, and bring the good trowel, the one you always said was yours.
Love, Jess
