Small heart tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together over a plaid blanket, with a small black heart outline tattooed on one finger. The heart is drawn in thin, even linework with no shading, and the tattoo is the only ink visible. The soft, neutral tones of the blanket and grey sleeve keep the focus on the small design.

Hold still, you great lump, or the needle goes in the wrong side of the thread and we'll be here till Michaelmas. Mum said that to Dad every Sunday while she worked the heels of his boots, and he never once held still. Now it's me at the kitchen table with the lamp pulled close and Tom waiting across the oilcloth, pretending he isn't nervous.

I'd drawn the heart first on the back of a gas bill, a plain thing with a dip at the top and a point at the bottom, drawn in one unbroken line so it would never look fussy. Mum always said a heart needs no more than that. Tom wanted it on the finger that would one day carry his mother's ring, though the ring was still in a drawer in Halifax and his mother was still arguing with the vicar about who had the right to give it away. He said the line was the point: a thing that didn't need shading to be true.
I worked with the fine nib and the ink my father used for ledgers. Tom didn't flinch once, and I took that as a sort of promise. When I finished, he held the finger up to the lamp and we both watched the little black loop sit there like a stitch that had decided to stay.
"It'll fade," I said, because somebody had to say it.
"Then you'll have to go over it," he said, and I wrote that down in my head so I'd remember, which is the only ledger I've ever really kept.
