Small outlined bow on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a small bow tattoo drawn in a single black outline, with a dark dot at the knot and two loops and trailing ends. The bow sits on the side of a finger on a hand curled into a fist, with the thumb resting over the finger. The plain cream background and warm lighting keep the focus on the thin, even linework and the small size of the design.

Dear Marit,

The guard at Halle Bridge took my passport, turned it over twice, and asked what I was bringing across. I said a dead man's watch and a bag of pear drops, which made him smile, and he waved me on without looking at the watch. You would have liked him. He had a pencil behind each ear.

I have been meaning to write since the spring, when you tied the blue ribbon round my wrist and told me to pull the knot tight so the ends would not come loose before I reached the river. I did not pull it tight. I wound it round my finger instead, the way Father used to tie parcel string for the post, and the bow sat crooked the whole way over the hills. Somewhere past the second lock it slid off, and I let it go into the reeds for the fish to decide about.

Now the papers are stamped and the lorry is waiting. I have a room above a bakery on Kramergasse with a window onto the cathedral and a landlady who counts the spoons every Sunday. Tomorrow I start at the printworks. The foreman says my hands are steady, which is more than he could say for the last girl.

Do not worry. Keep the spare blue thread for the next parcel, and when a bow comes out crooked, leave it crooked. It was always going to be crooked, you know. That was how we tied it.

Love, Ilse
