Small scissor tattoos on two fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held together so that the fingers form a scissor shape, with a small pair of scissors tattooed on the side of one finger on each hand. The scissors are drawn in simple dark outlines with minimal shading, and the ink appears black or dark grey. The plain green background and pink nail polish make the small tattoos the clear focus of the composition.

The wind came through the north tower the morning the Earl's cloth arrived, and it found the gaps in the roof the way it always did, lifting the dust off the great hall floor in grey sheets. My cousin Ida stood at the long table with the bolt of blue wool spread between us, the colour of a sky nobody in the valley had seen since the fire. "Left side," she said. "Always the left."

"You said the right was the true grain," I said.

We had argued about grain since we were girls, the way other families argue about land. Our grandmother had taught us both with one pair of shears she kept in a leather roll, and when she died the shears went to whoever could prove the better hand. Neither of us had proved anything. We had simply stopped speaking except through cloth. So when the steward brought word that the Earl wanted one cloak cut by Candlemas with no seam showing, we stood on either side of the table and reached for the same blade at the same moment, two hands caught in the rings of the handles, the wind rattling the shutters.

Ida laughed first. I had not heard that sound in years, and it went straight through the argument like a clean cut. "Fine," she said. "We cut it together, then."

We did. The wool fell open along a line neither of us had drawn, and when the cloak was finished it had no seam at all, only two small silver stitches at the hem, one for each of us, where the shears had met.
