Small red bow on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

A small bow outline tattoo sits on the side of a finger near the knuckle, with its loops and centre knot drawn in a dark linework. The bow is filled with red ink, and the shape is simple and compact. The hand is held up against a blurred blue-green background, with the tattoo as the main point of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bow went on the third finger of Nell Harrop's left hand the morning the post van failed to come over Blackmoor, and she tied it herself because her grandmother had always said a knot would hold a thing better than a clock. It was red silk, cut from the sash of a dress nobody had worn since the coronation dance, and it was only a little thing, but Carrow Dene was the kind of village where a little thing got noticed.

All that week she went about the shop with the knot pressing against her knuckle. Mr Gale asked what she had done to her hand. She said nothing, and that was nearly true. Each time she reached for a stamp or a tin of pear drops, the silk caught the light off the glass case and reminded her of the letter in her apron pocket, addressed to a man in Leeds who had once promised to write back and never had. She had meant to post it. She had not meant to keep it.

On the Sunday she walked down to the weir with the letter and a pair of kitchen scissors. The water was loud from the rain. She cut the silk where it looped over her knuckle, and the bow fell open in her palm, two loose tails and nothing else. She dropped the letter into the current and watched the ink run before it sank. Then she stood a long while, not sure what she was waiting for.

When she got home her mother asked where the ribbon had gone. Nell held up her hand and said it had come undone by itself, which was the sort of thing people in Carrow Dene accepted without asking more. That night she tied the two tails together again with a double knot, tight enough to leave a mark, and in the morning she could not remember what she had been meant to remember.
