Small heart tattoo on a hand with jewellery
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a dark surface beside white roses and green leaves, wearing several gold rings, a lotus bracelet and a stack of bangles. A small outlined heart tattoo sits on the back of the hand near the index finger, and a few fine marks are visible on the wrist. The ink is black and grey, and the warm, low-light composition is centred on the hand with a cream knit sweater at the lower edge.

Harry Dunmore brought the box in on a Tuesday, wrapped in a damp copy of the Hull Daily Mail, and he would not say whose it had been. Inside were eleven rings, a thin gold bangle, and a lotus pendant the size of a fingernail, its petals cut so fine I had to fetch my loupe from the drawer before I trusted my eyes.

I melted nothing for three days. I sat at the bench with the window open because the sea air steadied my hands, and I worked out what each piece wanted. The bangle had been pushed up over the knuckle every morning, so the metal had gone bright on one side and dull on the other. The rings were all a size too large for the same finger, which told me a man had owned them and given them away one at a time.
On the fourth morning I rang the number scratched inside the lid. A woman answered, and when I said the lotus had a hinge that had snapped, she went quiet for so long I thought the line had dropped. Then she said, "Mend the petals first. He always checked those." I did. I soldered the smallest one with a flame no bigger than a grain of rice, and I did not look at the clock once.
Dunmore came for the box on Friday. He turned the lotus over under the lamp and laughed, a short sound, like a drawer closing. "She'll want it posted," he said. "She won't come herself." I wrapped the rings in tissue, tucked a slip of paper under the lid with the date and the word repaired in my own square hand, and watched him carry it out into the rain. It was the only thing I ever signed that nobody would frame.
