Silver mandala temporary tattoo on a hand

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A manicured hand with long nude nails shows silver metallic temporary tattoos. A mandala-like medallion with lace-like filigree sits on the back of the hand, with fine chains linking it to a ring on the middle finger and a further ring and band on the index finger. Thin silver bands are also drawn across the wrist, and the metallic finish reads as grey and silver tones against the soft, blurred fur backdrop.

The reunion was held in the old infants' hall at Little Haddon, where the parquet still had chalk marks from a hopscotch nobody had bothered to scrub. Nell Brackwell arrived late with a silver lace medallion she had taken from her grandmother's tin, and she sat down beside Tom Frery, who had once eaten paste on a dare and never lived it down.

Her grandmother had told her about the lace-maker of Haddon Fen, who spun silver wire so fine it could be hung on a finger like thread. Any child who wore the medallion, the old woman said, would find every friend they had lost tied to them by a chain they could not see. Nell thought this was nonsense until Tom reached across the trestle table and lifted the chain from her wrist. The links caught on his cufflink and would not come free.

So they talked, because there was nothing else to do with their hands. Tom admitted he had quit the choir at eleven because he was frightened of the solo. Nell confessed she had told the whole class that Tom had wet himself on the coach to Norwich, which he had not. With each truth the chain loosened a little, and the lace grew warm against her palm.

By the time the caretaker switched off the lights, the chain lay in a silver heap on the parquet and the medallion had gone grey as fen mist. Nell pocketed it and walked home. In the morning she found its lace had worked itself into the shape of a small bird, wings half open, ready to fly.
