Small heart tattoo on the palm

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

An open palm faces the camera with a single small heart tattoo near the centre, rendered in dark grey or black ink. The heart is a simple filled shape with a slightly lighter edge, and it is the only ink visible. A plain silver band is worn on the middle finger, and the background shows a brown wooden frame with a Michigan-shaped cutout over a floral fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad never planted anything in a straight line, and the bean poles in the back bed still lean the way he left them the summer the lake came up over the road. I was nine. He gave me a stone from the shingle at the bottom of the garden, flat and grey, with a dent in one side that looked like a thumbprint, and told me to keep it somewhere I would see it each morning.

I kept it in the pocket of my overalls for years, then in a biscuit tin on the windowsill above the sink, where the seedlings go in March. The tin rusted at the hinge. Every spring I prised it open with a butter knife and took the stone out to check it was still there, as though it might have walked off to the Michigan shore without me, or to wherever he went after the hospital.

This spring I finally carried it out to the bed by the fence, where the sweet peas were pushing through the soil like closed fists. I dug a hole the depth of my knuckle, set the stone in it and pressed the earth down with the flat of my palm. Nothing was going to grow from it. That was never the point. The stone was a marker, not a seed.

By June the peas had climbed the netting and wrapped themselves round the bean poles he had left leaning. I stood there with the watering can and watched the tendrils find the wood and hold on, and I thought, well, you're not keeping me in a tin any more.
