Two small compass roses on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two compass roses sit on the inner wrist, a small one above a larger one closer to the dark sleeve. The linework is thin and detailed, with shading in grey and black ink around the points and rings. The hand is raised in front of a pale stone tiled surface, and the photo is taken from a close, slightly angled view.

Dear Marguerite, the band from Hull came off the boards at half past ten and the floor still smells of the sawdust you swore you'd sweep before you left. I found the second compass in the lost property tin under the cloakroom counter, a brass thing no bigger than a shilling, its needle gone soft with rust. Mrs Okafor says it belonged to a sailor who danced the Lindy with nobody but his own reflection in the mirror behind the bar.

I sat with it through the last waltz. You always said the north on a compass is only a promise the metal makes to the earth, and that people who trust it end up walking in circles on the sand. I thought about that while the lamps went down one by one over the pier, and I thought about how you took the bigger compass with you on the Tuesday train, the one with the ring of little letters, and left me the small one with its dented face. Every man who asked me to dance that week asked me which way was north, as if I'd know.
So I have pinned the small one above the door to the back stairs, where the draught from the sea comes in. It turns a little each time someone opens it, and I've stopped being cross about that. Come home at Easter, or send me a postcard with the wrong postmark so I can laugh about it. The floor is ready for you, and the sawdust is waiting too.
Love, Elsie
