Small heart with thin lines on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black heart sits at the centre of a tattoo formed by thin lines that fan out in two pairs, giving an arrow or bow-like shape. The linework is clean and fine, with the heart filled in solid and the lines left unshaded. The photograph is greyscale against grass, with the tattoo placed on the outer side of a pale forearm.

The boats had been gone eleven weeks when Maren Holt climbed the north cliff of Skarrow with her grandfather's bow and a single plain shaft. The wind came low from the west and bent the grass flat. Below her the sea was the colour of slate, and out past the skerries there was nothing at all, not a sail, not a gull.

She had fletched the arrow herself with grey kittiwake feathers and tipped it with a brass heart her uncle had beaten from an old ship's bell. Her mother watched from the path and said the sea could not read. Maren drew and loosed, not at the water but along it, so the shaft flew out over the swell and dropped where the tide would carry it. She could not see it land. She walked home and did not speak of it.
Three nights later the wind swung round to the east. At dawn the arrow lay on the shingle, the heart still bright, the feathers combed flat as if someone had smoothed them. Two days after that the Ilse came past the skerries under reefed sail, her crew calling for the lamp. Her husband Anders stepped onto the stones first and held the shaft up before he held her.
"It was in the water in front of the bow," he said. "Pointing the way home."
She never told him she had aimed it wrong on purpose, and he never asked. Her mother liked to say the sea gives back what it is given, and it gives it the right way round.
