Two dandelion seed heads on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two dandelion seed heads joined by thin curving stems, drawn with fine stippled dots to create the soft, fluffy texture of the seeds. The linework is delicate and the shading is built entirely from dots, with the stems fading out towards the lower right. The photograph is black and white, so the tattoo appears in black ink and grey tones against pale skin and a grey knitted sleeve.

Dear Win,

The landlady has given me the back attic room with the sloping ceiling, which suits me fine, because from the little window I can see the whole length of the cliff path where the dandelions go to seed. You'll laugh, but I have been out there every morning before the breakfast gong, picking the clocks and blowing them one by one to see how many breaths it takes. Mr Pargeter in number four says it is a waste of good wind. He is probably right.
Last Sunday a boy from the chandler's yard was sitting on the wall with two heads in his fist, and he asked me whether the seeds knew where they were going. I told him they didn't need to, that the wind did the deciding. He said that was a poor sort of answer and then gave me one of them anyway, and it is pressed between the pages of my hymnbook now, so you may have to forgive the smudge.
Something about the way they lift off the stalk and then drop out of sight over the edge reminds me of the morning Mother put us on the train. I thought I should write it down before the season ends and the heads all go grey. The stems bend so far out over the drop, and then they just thin away to nothing, which I suppose is how most things leave a place, if you're lucky.
Come in August. Bring the good scissors and your boots. I will keep the attic window open and we can count the seeds that reach the water.
Love, Edie
