Small hummingbird on upper chest

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small hummingbird in flight is tattooed on the upper chest, near the collarbone. The bird is drawn as a solid black silhouette with a little grey shading on the body and a pale highlight on the belly. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame against warm skin, with a grey top and a dark cord visible below it.

The stamp had jammed again, so Teodor Halász licked his thumb and pressed the ink pad flat with his palm instead. Behind the barrier a lorry sighed its brakes. The girl at the window was perhaps eleven, and her passport lay open on the counter, pinned at one corner by a small dark thing that turned out, when he lifted the edge, to be a bird cut from carbon paper and inked black with a biro. Someone had left its belly white on purpose.

Papers, he said. She shook her head and nodded at the bird, as though that settled it. Her grandmother had cut one for every crossing of her life, she explained, and this was the last of them, because the old woman had stopped being able to make the journey and the scissors had been given to her. She said the words carefully, the way a child repeats a recipe she has been made to learn by heart.

He checked the passport against the list on his screen, found nothing wrong, and found he did not want to be the one who decided what a bird was allowed to carry. He stamped the page. The ink came up clean and grey, and he slid the booklet back across the counter beside the paper bird.

When the girl lifted her hand, the draught from the open door caught the bird and turned it over once, black wings against the white of the counter. Then it rose over the barrier, quicker than the lorry's engine, and hung for a moment in the sleet above the wire before it went on up the hill toward the other side.
