Fine line black tattoo of an arrow with a diamond tip and feathered fletching, framed by dotted curves, on the back of a person's ankle.

Fine line arrow with dotted curves on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small arrow with a diamond-shaped head and feathered fletching runs vertically, with two thin, dotted curves wrapping around it to form a stylised shape. The linework is delicate and single-needled in black ink, with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits centrally on the ankle against a dark leather surface, which makes the outline stand out clearly.

Dear Tam,

The boat came in on Thursday without you, and Mrs Gunn at the shop says the hake are running well off the Stack, so I have been out at dusk with Father's bow as if I could shoot a fish. I can't, of course. The arrow with the diamond head still hangs on the nail by the door, its feathers gone grey with salt, and every time I pass it I think of the spool of line we tied to its shaft the day you left.

The coastguard man came over again on Monday to show us the drill. You fire the arrow over the rocks where the rope can't reach, the line runs out behind it in a long curl like the tide on the sand, and the knot sits in the little loops you can see in the wind. He was very patient with my hands. He said my knots looked like a sheep had walked through them, which was fair.

Last night there were three flashes out past the Stack, then nothing. I ran down the cliff path with the bow over my shoulder and the arrow in my coat, and I stood on the shingle until the wind swung round, which it did about half past eleven, the way it always does before the weather turns. I fired blind into the dark. The line went out, and I heard a voice shout back.

It was only Dougie Rae with his net and a bad ankle, but he is alive, and he says to tell you the arrow flew straighter than your aim ever did. Come home when you can. The feathers still point the way the wind was blowing, and I have not moved the nail.
