Small line symbol tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a stylised symbol sits on the side of one finger, with a looped circle at the top, a crossbar with a curled flourish and a downward pointing arrow below. The linework is solid and even, with simple black ink and no shading. The hand rests palm down on a red surface, and the tattoo is centred in the frame against pale skin.

The ladder wobbled when Maud leaned out to reach the corner of the board, so she held her breath and let the brush trail its last gold line along the S. Outside the chandlery the harbour slapped against the wall, and a gull was working through somebody's dropped chips on the cobbles below. Her father's stencil book lay open on the sill, its pages soft as cloth. Beside the name Harker, he had always marked the same small sign, a loop perched on a cross with a curl at its waist and an arrow dropping from the foot. He called it the tide key and never once explained it.

Nobody in Cullen Bay could tell her what it meant. The pattern book was from 1880-something, and the men who had drunk in the Ship had long since drunk themselves into the churchyard. Maud had painted the sign on the board for thirty years without thinking about it, the way you hum a tune in someone else's kitchen.

Then Mrs Harker came down the hill with a flask of tea and stood at the foot of the ladder. She looked up at the mark for a long time. "Walter used to say that arrow was for the slip," she said. "Where the water stopped in the big storm, the year we married. He cut the line into the steps himself."

That evening Maud went down to the slipway with a torch and found the notch, worn almost smooth, a hand's width above the weed. The arrow on the board pointed straight at it. She climbed back up, mixed a little black, and painted the arrow again on the sign, sharper this time. Beneath it, in letters small enough to fit the gap, she wrote the date of the flood and the height of the water, so the next painter would know how far the sea had come.
