Pink circle and blue cross on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a pink circle with a blue cross beneath it, sitting on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm. The linework is thin and slightly soft, with the pink and blue ink appearing lightly saturated. The tattoo is centred in a close crop, with blurred greenery and a chair in the background.

The pedlar had left the mirror on the stump at the forest edge, where the last cottage of Hollin Way met the beeches, and nobody in the village would touch it. Old Maud said the glass held the sky too long. The children dared each other to look and then ran home with their faces pale.

Agnes went out for it anyway, the week the frost came early and the goats would not settle. She was sixteen and had no patience for dares. She wiped the glass on her apron and held it up, and the beeches behind her were gone, replaced by the brick wall of the mill that had burnt down before her mother was born. Through the reflection she saw a woman standing where the mill door should be, ringing a bell with no clapper.
She turned round. Nothing but trees and the stump and a jay complaining overhead. She looked again, and the woman was there, smaller now, holding out a hand with a ring of iron in it, as if to say, take what was owed.
Agnes carried the mirror home and hung it above the hearth, face to the wall. Each morning after that she turned it round and asked the glass what it wanted, and each morning she got the same answer: a thing made by hand, carried back to the place it was taken from. She spent a winter learning to forge rings, and at the spring thaw she walked them to the mill ruins one by one, and the bell stopped ringing.
