Small number 5 on the side of the body
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin-lined numeral 5 sits on pale skin at the side of the torso, with a dark waistband and fingers with dark painted nails visible at the edge of the frame. The linework is crisp and even, rendered in solid black ink with no shading. The image is black and white, and the tattoo is placed centrally in the frame with plenty of empty skin around it.

The lever marked five has been stiff since before you came to the box, and Mr Haigh says that is the point of it. You learn its weight the way you learn a dog's temper, by getting it wrong first. Your palm slides on the cold iron knob at half past four while the wind pushes rain flat against the glass, and the signal arm above the cutting stays stubbornly red.

The logbook is no help. Every page for thirty years lists the signals by number and time, and in the margin, beside every fifth entry, someone has ticked a small neat cross. You asked Mr Haigh about it on your first winter. He only said the five had never once failed a driver, and that a lever which refused you was often the one protecting you from a worse mistake.
On a Thursday in February the telephone rings twice, the bell line hums, and the 5.52 goods comes grinding round the bend from Hebden with its lamp swinging. You put both hands on the lever, lean, and feel nothing give. Then you think of the cross in the margin, the iron in your palms, the rain. You stop pulling and wait, counting the seconds the way Haigh taught you, until the stiffness loosens of its own accord, like a held breath.
The arm drops. Green light spills across the wet rails, and the goods train passes under it with a long, unhurried sigh. You write the time in the book, and beside it, for the first time, you make your own small cross.
