Two overlapping circles on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a small tattoo of two overlapping outline circles on the side of a leg, just above a white knitted sock. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or fill. The black and white photograph is softly lit against a pale background, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

The ewes have to be brought down off the top field before the snow sets in, and you are the only one left who knows the gate that sticks. Your father used to lift it on its hinge with his knee while he talked to the dog. You do the same now, though your knee is not his, and the hinge gives with a complaint that carries across the frost to the barn. Two lanterns hang from the rafters inside, one for each of you, and you have never once asked which of you your mother meant them for.

By the time you reach the bottom wall the light has gone the colour of skimmed milk. The flock spills through the gap in a grumbling knot, and you count them twice against the chalk marks on the post, the way he taught you. Thirty-one. The thirty-second is missing, a grey-faced ewe with a torn ear, and you stand there with your breath clouding in front of you, weighing the hill against the barn door. The hill wins, because it always does.

She is under the holly at the edge of the wood, folded into herself as if she had only meant to rest a moment. You kneel and work your hands under her and talk nonsense all the way back up, the same nonsense your father talked, about the weather and the price of feed and whether the Hallidays will ever fix their fence. When you reach the gate you set her down and lean on the bar, and the two of you look back at the dark field, and the first real snow begins to fall in the circles of the lantern light, slow and separate, then not separate at all.
