Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small Mickey Mouse head is drawn as a single black outline on the outer side of an ankle. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. The photo is taken from the side against a plain wall and a speckled grey floor, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

She had no name to give. She had lost it in the flood the winter before, along with her father's boat. She sat on the parapet and waited for the water to drop. A small grey mouse came out of the reeds with two round ears held up like cups, carrying a stub of candle. It looked at her the way the customs man never had, set the candle down on the stone, and went back into the reeds without a word.
Over the next three nights the mouse brought one thing each time: a bent key, a horn button, a scrap of blue ribbon. Each had belonged to somebody who had crossed that bridge and never come back. Ottilie laid them out in a row along the stone. On the fourth night she understood that the row was a name, spelled in the only letters the river had left her, and she said it aloud when the customs man came to light his lamp.
He read the row of objects, rubbed his jaw, and stamped her papers without asking anything else. The mouse rode across on the string of the flour sack, ears up, and climbed down on the far bank. It stood a while in the mud, then turned back toward the reeds.
