Infinity symbol with love on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of an infinity symbol wraps around the ankle, with the word love written in cursive script inside the left loop. The numerals 10-15-11 sit in the right loop in a clean, delicate hand. The tattoo is in black ink with no shading, photographed head-on against a pale tiled floor.

Nobody in Porthgwidden agreed on where Maud Pritchard had learned the endless knot, only that she tied it into the last net she mended before the Corrie Ann went out past the Scaur that October. Her husband Tom stood in the wheelhouse with the radio tuned to the wrong station, grinning like a boy, and she made him promise to keep his thumb on the loop while he steered, so the twine would not fray in his pocket.

The wind came round on the fifteenth and the lifeboat was out until the small hours. Maud stood at the top of the slipway with the net over her arm, counting lights the way the coastguard had taught her: one for the boat, one for the buoy, one for the lamp on the Scaur that never went dark. By first light there was a grey hull nosing into the harbour mouth and two men on deck, one of them waving a sodden cap above his head like a flag of surrender.
She spread the net out across the wet stones and went over every mesh with her fingers. Among the old repairs she found the loop she had tied, worn smooth, and beside it a second knot, clumsy and new, that Tom had worked with numb hands somewhere off the rocks. Two loops, one line, and no end to either of them. Maud sat down on the cold stone and laughed until the gulls lifted off the wall and wheeled away over the water.
