Infinity and semicolon tattoo on a limb

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo shows a looped infinity symbol with a semicolon formed from a dot and a comma on each side of the loop. The linework is thin, solid black and even, with slightly heavier strokes at the comma and dot. The photograph is black and white, with the design centred on the skin and the background softly out of focus.

Dear Ruth,

The Bramley by the lower gate has finally given up its last crop, and Tom says we ought to take the saw to it before the frosts. I told him no. I walked out there this morning with the basket on my hip and found it still bearing, three or four green knots of fruit hanging off a limb that's nothing but grey bark and one stubborn tuft of new leaf. You'd laugh at me, standing under a tree like a fool, talking to it.

Your mother never liked the story of how Grandad grafted that branch onto the old stock the year the orchard flooded. He said the trunk was done, a rotten heart, and the wood had no business producing anything. But he cut a shoot from the healthy side, bound it with raffia and wax, and waited. Three summers on, it fruited. He called it the comma tree, because it was the one place in the orchard where the sentence didn't stop, only paused for breath.

I've been thinking about that while packing up your old room. You wrote that you want to put the whole year behind you and start again, and I understand that. But you don't have to close a sentence to begin the next one. Leave the bits you can't finish open, the way he did. Half a sentence is still a sentence, and a branch can carry more than its share of the crop.

Come home for the picking. Bring the boy if you like. There are windfalls under the gate and nobody left to fuss over them but me.

Love, Nan
