Old Hector kept the light at Skerrin Head for thirty-one years, and he always said the goat came in with the winter gales and never before. You heard it first on the stairs, a click of hooves on wet iron, then the smell of kelp and tallow. He never let on to the relief boat men. They would have had him certified.

The creature was half goat and half fish, the way the old almanacs drew the sea-goat, with horns curled like a ram's and a tail that ended in one unbroken loop, coiled up in the spray. It climbed the cliff path the way a man climbs a ladder he has used all his life. Hector would set out a dish of sweet tea, which it never touched, and it would stand at the gallery rail watching the ships come in off the Minch, counting their lamps the way a shepherd counts ewes.

The autumn the Marie Lowe went down on the Teeth, the sea-goat came up the stairs at dusk, shaking water from its horns. It planted itself beside the lamp and would not move. Hector understood, perhaps too late, that it had not come for tea. He lit the big lens, wound the clockwork by hand until his shoulders burned, and kept the beam turning until the last boat limped into harbour with eleven souls aboard.

When the dawn came up grey, the rail was empty and the flagstone was wet with a single trail of salt water. Hector never saw the goat again. He liked to think it had gone back down to the sea, its long tail trailing behind it like a rope someone had forgotten to coil.
