Om symbol on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black Om symbol is tattooed on the inner forearm, drawn with smooth, even linework and no shading. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the symbol sits near the wrist with the curved strokes flowing across the skin. A gold bracelet with a filigree charm is worn on the wrist beside it, and the photo is warm-toned and taken at a slight angle.

Late August, and the Bramley trees at Cold Harbour had started dropping their fruit before anyone was ready for them. Nell pushed the wheelbarrow down the rows with one wheel squealing, counting windfalls the way her father had taught her, by the handful, never by the sack. The wasps had found the bruised ones first. They came up out of the long grass in a low, steady drone that seemed to rise from the ground itself, and she stopped beside the old quince to listen to it.

Her father used to say the orchard hummed when it was happy. He said it on the morning the frost took the blossom two springs back, when they stood in the mud with their coats buttoned to the chin and he said it anyway, because somebody had to. She had not believed him then. She believed him even less when the buyer from Kent sent a cheque with a note that read like an apology.

Now she tipped the barrow onto the heap by the gate and watched the wasps lift and settle, lift and settle, the sound rising and falling in one long breath. The tractor was coming up the lane with the new owner's boy at the wheel, and the dog ran out to meet it. Nell wiped her hands on her trousers and found that she was humming too, low in her throat, a single note held until it ran out of air.

She picked up the last apple, split it with her thumb, and found the seeds laid out in their neat five-pointed star. Her father had called that the orchard's own signature. She dropped it into the barrow and went down the lane to meet the boy.
