Small ornamental feather tattoo on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small feather is drawn in black linework with red fills and dotted detail, decorated with scrolls, dots and a small flower-like motif. The fine, even lines and stippled dots give it a delicate, ornamental look. The feather sits diagonally across the ankle against a plain skin background, with a single dot marking each end of the design.

Sit closer, you with the dusty boots, and mind the fire, it eats sparks like a goat eats thistles. I will tell you about the feather that hung on the Salt Road post at Kesh Well, the one with red dots painted up its spine like rain on a cooling stone.

Every carrier who crossed the flats in those days tied a feather to that post before he went on, and every one who came back untied his own and knotted it lower down. Old Dawud the water-seller counted them each dawn. Forty-one feathers, grey and brown, and one bent into the shape of a question mark that nobody claimed. He said it belonged to a woman who went out after the rains and never came back, and that she had sent it ahead so the well would know her name.

The summer the wind turned, a boy called Tarek came to the well with a camel that would not drink. He saw the odd feather, its little flowers worked in red thread, and asked Dawud whose it was. Dawud gave him the old answer, the one about names. Tarek laughed and said the feather was not a name but a map, its scrolls running the way the dunes ran, and that if you followed the dots from one end to the other you would walk straight to the spring under the black rock.

Dawud did not believe him. Tarek walked it anyway, found the spring, and when he came back he cut a fresh feather from his own cloak and tied it beside the other. Now the post carries two, and Dawud swears the old one has grown a little redder every year, as though it were drinking.
